Tavira - Pearl of the east

Tavira is one of the most elegant and beautiful towns in the Algarve. Once a bustling and strategically important hub, it is today serene, peaceful, and wonderfully laid-back. History enthusiasts will delight in a walking tour through the town, discovering its 22 churches, the iconic bridge, and the salt pans-there is so much to explore.

The town’s rich history is evident in its architecture, from the medieval castle to the Renaissance-style Misericórdia church, which houses an impressive collection of sacred art. The water tower, a remnant of the town’s Moorish past, offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

During the tour, there is also the option to visit the “camera obscura” inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, offering a unique way to “fly” over the town and appreciate its layout before setting out on foot.

Tavira’s economy, once heavily reliant on the fishing industry, has shifted due to changes in tuna migration patterns. Nearby Santa Luzia, the capital of octopus and tuna fishing, can be included in a tailored tour with transport arranged from Tavira. Let’s make it happen!
