Discovering the Discoveries

We’ll journey back to the golden age of exploration, when the Portuguese embarked on one of the greatest enterprises in history: charting the sea route to India. And it all began here, in Lagos, in southern Portugal.
Lagos is a captivating town in the western Algarve, offering something for every visitor. In the 15th century, it was the operational base from which Portugal explored the African coast. It was here that Prince Henry the Navigator prepared the caravels for the great Discoveries. Throughout the town, street names echo this extraordinary past. Among its historic landmarks, two stand out: the first slave market in Europe and the baroque Church of St. Anthony.
No visit is complete without the breathtaking scenery of Ponta da Piedade. With its dramatic cliffs and golden rock formations, it has often been called one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in the world.
Our journey continues to the legendary Cape St. Vincent, once thought to be the very edge of the world. Nearby lies Sagres, a town steeped in history. Here you’ll find the Sagres Fortress, home to Prince Henry’s famous Naval School — a gathering place for astronomers, cartographers, and sailors of the time. Within its walls lies the remarkable "rose of the winds," a stone compass that stretches an impressive 43 meters in diameter.
And so, at the edge of Europe, our voyage of discovery draws to a close — just as it once did for the explorers who set sail from these shores.
